In Amsterdam, she played with a full band, herself mostly on the keyboard, and for the most part she delivered a happy, contagious, shout-out-loud version of her music. She is full of energy on stage: spontaneous, talkative, dancing, moving around, trying to involve and communicate with the audience. Her song “We Might Be Dead By Tomorrow” was featured in the viral video “First Kiss” which at the time of writing has been viewed 93 million times. Her debut album “I Thought I Was An Alien” came the year after, however it wasn’t until 2014 that she made her biggest impact. This was only the beginning as well, by 2011 she was collaborating with Spike Jonze, who would later feature her in his hit film Her. It reached number one on the Danish iTunes chart and was the number 9 song of the year to listeners of the Australian national radio station Triple J.Īfter this the world was her oyster, her music was used in a Stella McCartney fashion show and she supported M.I.A on the U.K leg of her KALA tour. By 2007 she had released her debut single, “I’ll Kill Her”, and it was a surprise hit in Denmark and Australia.
It was at this point that she turned her attention to music and began writing songs. She also dropped out of this to take acting up again and appeared in a number of French films. She left her home city of Bordeaux and moved to Paris to study the craft with Eva St Paul, but dropped out after a year to resume her education. Her first passion was acting, to the extent that she left home at the age of 16 to pursue it.
As it turns out, the right way of expressing herself was through folk inflected indie-rock, and every music fan around is vastly better off for it. This is a woman who was always going to be a very big deal, she just needed to find the right way of expressing herself. Soko’s story is that of someone ambitious, self-possesed and almost frighteningly confident.
